Introduction

Proton Pump Inhibitors are used to treat a variety of issues, but are known to cause serious issues, including kidney failure and more, which has resulted in a proton pump inhibitors lawsuit.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) are a class of drug that are used in the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), heart burn, ulcers, acid reflux, and other acid-related disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Astra Zenica™ manufacturers Nexium© and Prilosec©, which are the #1 prescribed drugs in America. In the last 12 years, they made an estimated $80-$100 billion dollars in sales, with over $8 billion dollars in sales annually.

Although originally demonstrating a favorable safety profile, the growing, widespread use of PPIs has led to growing safety concerns as well. In 1992, the PPI omeprazole was identified as the cause of Acute Interstitial Nephritis (AIN) in an elderly woman. This led to the publication of many retrospective and biopsy-confirmed reports that suggested a connection between AIN and PPI use. Studies have also shown that long term use can result in dependency, as stopping the drug can actually make GERD and Reflux worse than it was before, and can even cause Acid Reflux in people who did not have it prior to taking PPIs. 1

History of the Case

In April 2016, CNN reported that people who took PPIs had a 96% increased risk of kidney failure, and a 28% increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared to people who took an alternative based on a newly released study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

In light of this information, a proton pump inhibitors lawsuit was filed to help those affected by this drug. If you or a loved one have experienced any of these problems, you may have a claim in this lawsuit.
