hernia mesh injurySurgical mesh is used during an open surgery to provide additional support to weakened or damaged tissue. In 2006, the Atrium C-Qur™ Surgical Mesh was approved by the FDA 510K approval program. This program allowed the Atrium C-Qur Surgical Mesh to be introduced to the healthcare market without rigorous pre-market research and studies, and the Atrium C-Qur Surgical Mesh has since been used in patients for hernia repair, chest wall reconstruction, traumatic wounds, and surgical wounds.

The Atrium C-Qur Surgical Mesh was marketed as featuring an all-natural Omega-3 gel coating, when, in fact, the coating is actually a blend of triglycerides and Omega-3 fatty acids, derived from a purified, pharmaceutical-grade fish oil.

Following multiple complaints in 2012 regarding infections and contamination associated with Atrium C-Qur Surgical Mesh, the FDA issued a warning letter to the Atrium Medical Corporation for not addressing these complaints. In 2013, the FDA issued a class 2 recall of the Atrium C-Qur Surgical Mesh, stating that the coating of the surgical mesh could adhere to the inner packaging when exposed to high humidity. Manufacturing and distribution of the Atrium C-Qur Surgical Mesh was stopped in February of 2015, and will not resume until the manufacturing, processing, packaging, holding, and distribution are found compliant by the FDA.
