What is the correlation between Viagra and melanoma?

Viagra is within a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. In June of 2014, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found a correlation between PDE5 inhibitors and melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The study looked at surveys gathered over a period of more than 10 years from over 25,000 men averaging 64 years in age. The surveys included questions regarding Viagra usage, prior history of skin cancer, history of sunburn and sun exposure, and other questions.
The study found that men who had recently used Viagra had an 84% increase in the risk of developing melanoma. This was almost twice the risk of men who had not taken Viagra. Even men who had taken the drug for a short period of time had an increased risk of developing melanoma. Dermatologist June Robinson, M.D., wrote a commentary in the June 2014 article that illuminated the correlation between Viagra and PDE5 inhibitors; both the drug and the metastasizing cancer use the same cell-signaling pathways.
