Why did the FDA issue a warning about Invokana?

According the warning, issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May of 2015, Invokana and similar Type 2 diabetes medications may lead to Ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal condition. Invokana belongs to a class of drugs known as SGLT2 inhibitors, which were developed to help the kidneys expel excess blood glucose through the urine. SGLT2 inhibitors are typically prescribed to Type 2 diabetes patients who cannot control their disease through diet or exercise.
In some cases, SGLT2 inhibitors can cause ketoacidosis, a dangerous condition in which the body creates too many acidic ketones. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include abdominal pain, fatigue, vomiting, confusion, and dehydration. The FDA has suggested that individuals who have taken Invokana and experienced these symptoms should go directly to the hospital, and may need treatment.
