Studies Explore Dangers of Long-Term Nexium Use

Recent studies have associated low magnesium and dementia with long-term Nexium use.

The serum magnesium levels of those 243 patients showed significantly lower magnesium levels than the patients not taking Nexium or other proton pump inhibitors. The low-magnesium dialysis patients also had lower albumin and potassium levels and a higher risk of 1-year mortality.

Two German studies have reviewed the relationship between proton pump inhibitors and dementia. The 2015 study followed 3,327 people over the age of 75 for 6 years. None of the participants had dementia at the onset of the study. The results indicated that the participants who took a proton pump inhibitor like Nexium had an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The 2016 study included 73,679 patients over the age of 75. At the beginning of the study, the patients were dementia free. After 7 years of monitoring this study also found a connection between regular proton pump inhibitor use and dementia.

These studies do not prove that proton pump inhibitors like Nexium cause low magnesium or dementia. The studies show that Nexium ought to be used with caution and only for the limited time.

Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Prevacid treat long-lasting heartburn and acid reflux by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. This reduction in acid can prevent ulcers from forming and may heal the esophagus after it is damaged by acid reflux, . Some studies have shown that acid reflux is sometimes worse after stopping long-term Nexium use. If prescribed by a doctor, Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors are FDA approved for 4 weeks of use. Nexium 24HR, the over-the-counter version of Nexium, is recommended for only 2 weeks of use and should be used only a few times a year. For treatment of acid reflux lasting longer than 2-4 weeks, people should consult with their doctor.
