Recent cases against Johnson & Johnson allege the company hid data and lied to government agencies regarding the safety of Baby Powder and Shower to Shower.
Court documents from one of the recent Baby Powder lawsuits in St. Louis reveal that Johnson & Johnson concealed data that would list talc, the main ingredient in Baby Powder and Shower to Shower, as possibly carcinogenic. Studies have shown that talc fibers in the ovaries can cause ovarian cancer – one of the most deadly female cancers. Johnson & Johnson, in partnership with Imerys Talc, the company that mines and distributes the majority of talc throughout the world, hid data that misled consumers into believing talc products like Baby Powder and Shower to Shower are safe for use.
In 1993, the United States National Toxicology Program published a study showing talc to be a carcinogen. In response to this study, the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association formed the Talc Interested Party Task Force. Johnson & Johnson and Imerys Talc were the primary contributors to this task force and their main goal was to prevent any regulation over the talc industry. The task force hired scientists to perform biased research on talc products, and then members of the task force edited the reports before they were submitted to government agencies. According to the suit, Johnson & Johnson along with Imerys Talc knowingly released false information to the public.
The court documents allege that a Toxicologist hired by the Talc Interested Party Task Force criticized the group for publishing false information to the public, yet nothing was done to correct any of the misinformation. Two St. Louis juries have now awarded over $127 million to two women who used Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower before being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
